In a disturbing turn of events, far-right protesters, fueled by anger and misinformation circulating online, clashed violently with police outside a mosque in northwest England. Authorities reported that the violent crowd, which set fire to a police van and several vehicles, was believed to be affiliated with the English Defence League, a far-right organization. Alex Goss, Assistant Chief Constable of Merseyside Police, stated, “There has been much speculation and hypothesis around the status of a 17-year-old male who is currently in police custody, and some individuals are using this to bring violence and disorder to our streets.”

Police had previously clarified that the name of a suspect circulating on social media was incorrect. They confirmed that the male suspect was born in Britain, countering the false narrative that he was an asylum seeker.

The Liverpool Region Mosque Network issued a statement denouncing the “heinous” stabbing as an attack on society, asserting that it was unrelated to the Muslim community. “A minority of people are attempting to portray that this inhumane act is somehow related to the Muslim community,” the group emphasized on X (formerly Twitter). “Frankly, it is not, and we must not allow those who seek to divide us and spread hatred to exploit this tragedy.”

As tensions escalated, officers clad in riot gear were bombarded with bricks torn from garden walls by masked members of the crowd, who chanted slogans such as “No surrender!” and “English till I die!” Amid the chaos, firecrackers exploded, sirens blared, and a police helicopter hovered overhead, intensifying the atmosphere of mayhem.

A total of 22 officers sustained injuries during the confrontation, with eight suffering more severe wounds, including fractures and lacerations. Additionally, two police dogs were injured by thrown bricks, and a third dog suffered burns.

Just a day prior, these girls had participated in a Taylor Swift-themed dance and yoga workshop, enjoying the first week of summer vacation. A teenager armed with a knife entered the studio and launched a brutal attack, leaving the community in shock.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper expressed her horror at the incident, stating, “It’s difficult to comprehend or put into words the horror of what happened. What should have been a joyful start to the summer turned into an unspeakable tragedy.” The victims, identified as Alice Dasilva Aguiar, 9, Elsie Dot Stancombe, 7, and Bebe King, 6, succumbed to their injuries, while eight children and two adults remain hospitalized, with several in critical condition.

In the wake of the tragedy, an emotional crowd gathered outside The Atkinson Theatre and Museum in Southport, observing a moment of silence to honor the victims. Swift herself took to Instagram, sharing her shock and sorrow over the incident. “These were just little kids at a dance class,” she wrote. “I am at a complete loss for how to ever convey my sympathies to these families.”

As the community grappled with the aftermath, the 17-year-old suspect was arrested shortly after the attacks, facing charges of murder and attempted murder. Police confirmed that he was born in Cardiff, Wales, and had lived in a village approximately five kilometers from Southport. As of now, he has not been formally charged.
