However, in a surprising turn of events, Nemour will not be competing under the French flag, a decision grounded in a complex nationality switch to represent Algeria. This shift arose from a prolonged conflict with the French gymnastics federation, which has resulted in a significant loss for the host nation, as they miss out on what could have been their best chance for an Olympic medal in a highly watched category.
The friction between Nemour and the French federation began as a struggle over training facilities in preparation for the Olympics. Over time, this disagreement escalated into a series of accusations regarding overtraining, coupled with sharp exchanges and a lengthy 18-month investigation. This inquiry concluded in December, revealing that the federation had been “hounding” Nemour’s home gym located in Avoine, a quaint village in western France.
“Kaylia’s dream was always to represent France at the Olympics, just like any aspiring athlete,” explained her mother, Stéphanie Nemour, who also serves as the president of her daughter’s gym. “We have many distressed gymnasts here who are struggling to comprehend why the federation, which is supposed to support and nurture their talents, is behaving in such a detrimental manner.”
