Tragedy Strikes Kerala Amidst Heavy Rains
In a devastating turn of events, at least 23 individuals lost their lives in the southern Indian state of Kerala on Tuesday, as landslides triggered by relentless heavy rains wreaked havoc in the region’s hilly and rugged terrain. Officials have cautioned that the death toll may rise as rescue operations continue.
Rescue workers faced significant challenges in accessing the affected areas, particularly in the rural district of Wayanad, where bridges have been washed away and roads completely obliterated. Local authorities reported that over 400 families were stranded in remote villages, isolated due to the destruction of the sole road that connected them to the rest of Kerala.
In response to the crisis, the state government has mobilized helicopters for rescue efforts. Kerala’s Health Minister, Veena George, stated, “The weather conditions are extremely adverse, but we are doing everything within our power to assist those in need.”
As the situation unfolds, officials have confirmed that more than 70 people have sustained injuries due to the extreme weather. Disturbing footage from television broadcasts has depicted torrents of water surging through severely damaged residential areas, highlighting the extent of the devastation.
The India Meteorological Department has issued warnings that heavy rainfall is expected to persist in Kerala for at least the next 24 hours, with red alerts being raised for several districts. In light of the severe weather conditions, schools across parts of the state were ordered to close on Monday, following several days of continuous downpour.
