Investigation into Athletes’ Positive Drug Tests Linked to Food Contamination
The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) announced on Tuesday that it is actively investigating a troubling trend where athletes in China, along with competitors from other nations, are evading sanctions for positive drug tests. This situation arises from claims that they inadvertently ingested banned substances through contaminated food sources.
This revelation follows a report by The New York Times, which highlighted a previously undisclosed case involving two elite Chinese swimmers. These athletes tested positive for a potent anabolic steroid in 2022 but were exonerated late last year after China’s antidoping authority attributed their positive results to contaminated hamburgers.
This incident marks the third occurrence in recent years where athletes from China have attributed their positive drug tests to food contamination, raising significant concerns within the global sports community.
In its statement, WADA disclosed that while investigating the two swimmers’ cases, it also became aware of two additional Chinese athletes from different sports—specifically shooting and BMX bike riding—who tested positive for trace amounts of the same banned substance, metandienone, in early 2023.
China’s antidoping regulator conducted extensive tests and found metandienone in numerous meat samples throughout the country. Consequently, WADA announced that these two athletes, along with the two swimmers, were cleared of any doping violations.
In light of the findings from China’s investigations, WADA initiated its own inquiry earlier this year to evaluate the circumstances surrounding the contamination of meat with metandienone, focusing on both China and other nations. This investigation aims to assess the scale and risks associated with such contamination, ensuring the integrity of competitive sports is preserved.
