The 62-year-old journalist, who gained widespread acclaim for his role in presenting the BBC’s flagship 10 o’clock evening newscast, was highly regarded for his coverage of significant national events, including the solemn death and funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, as well as the historic coronation of King Charles III last year. After a remarkable career that spanned over four decades, Edwards concluded his tenure at the BBC in April 2024.
In a statement released on Monday, the Metropolitan Police noted that Edwards is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, facing charges related to the sharing of illegal images via WhatsApp. The police report indicated that Edwards, a resident of Southwark, London, “has been charged with three counts of making indecent images of children following a thorough investigation by the Metropolitan Police.”
The alleged offenses are reported to have occurred between December 2020 and April 2022 and pertain to images that were circulated in a WhatsApp chat. It was revealed that Edwards was arrested on November 8, 2023, and subsequently charged on June 26, following the approval of the Crown Prosecution Service.
Once criminal proceedings are underway, British media outlets face strict regulations concerning the dissemination of information about the case to ensure that the integrity of the judicial process is maintained. On Monday, the police issued a cautionary reminder regarding these restrictions, stating, “Media and the public are strongly reminded that this is an active case. Nothing should be published, including on social media, that could potentially prejudice future court proceedings.”
Born in Bridgend, Wales, in 1961, Edwards has been a stalwart of the BBC, emerging as one of its highest-paid presenters, with an annual salary ranging between £475,000 and £479,999, equivalent to over $600,000, as reported in the broadcaster’s most recent annual financial statement.
