Summer Traffic Jams Hit European Motorways

As holidaymakers embark on their summer getaways, traffic jams are causing significant delays on European motorways. The German Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club (ADAC) predicts that this weekend will see some of the worst traffic congestion of the year across the nation. The most severe backups are expected on the roads in Bavaria, as tourists flock to popular vacation spots in Italy and Austria.

The first substantial wave of travelers began their journeys on Friday, but many families are also expected to make their way south on Saturday and Sunday, according to ADAC traffic expert Alexander Kreip. Reports indicate that there were already 14 kilometers of traffic jams on the Bavarian A8 motorway heading towards Austria, as noted by a spokesperson from the German police.

In Slovenia, traffic is also experiencing a surge, particularly with the onset of the summer holiday season for some regions. The Slovenian traffic safety agency AVP has initiated a warning campaign, urging drivers to take regular breaks during long journeys and to stay hydrated, especially during these hot summer days.

  • Traffic congestion is expected on the western Ljubljana highway ring.
  • Heavy traffic is also anticipated on the Primorska motorway.

Moreover, Croatia is bracing for long queues due to an influx of travelers and several traffic incidents. A recent accident forced traffic to merge into a single lane between the Zadar East and Zadar Center junctions heading towards Zagreb, resulting in congestion that stretched approximately 9 kilometers.

At the Split ferry port, congestion is palpable, with the ferry company Jadrolinija reporting record-breaking traffic statistics, including 16,000 vehicles and 80,000 passengers. To enhance the travel experience for tourists, the Croatian Tourist Board is distributing complimentary bottles of water and car air fresheners at major toll plazas and ferry ports this weekend, welcoming visitors with a thoughtful gesture.
