Recent Developments in Eastern Ukraine

On Saturday, Russia announced the capture of yet another village in the war-torn eastern region of Ukraine, specifically in Donetsk. As fierce battles continue to unfold, reports indicate that Russian forces are making strides towards the city of Pokrovsk. The Russian Defense Ministry declared the “liberation” of a village named Lozuvatska, situated approximately 24 kilometers from Pokrovsk. However, Ukrainian officials have yet to verify this claim, asserting instead that they successfully repelled 37 Russian attacks in the vicinity on the same day.

In a related incident, Russian forces launched an assault on the town of Hlukhiv, located in Ukraine’s Sumy Oblast. This devastating attack resulted in the tragic death of a child and left 14 others injured, including seven children, as reported by local authorities. Eyewitness accounts from local media indicate that multiple launch rocket systems were utilized in the assault, causing significant damage to high-rise buildings, residential areas, vehicles, and even an educational institution.

Orbán’s Controversial Remarks

In a separate yet significant development, Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán delivered a speech in Baile Tusnad, Romania, where he expressed his belief that the European Union is on a path towards oblivion. His remarks come amidst mounting criticism from fellow European leaders following his recent controversial “peace mission” trips to Moscow and Beijing, which were aimed at mediating an end to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Orbán stated, “Brussels is criticising me, but they actually support this war. After all, I am criticised for not giving support to the EU in its effort to support the war.” His stance has set him apart from other EU leaders, as he is often regarded as having the warmest relations with the Kremlin. Throughout the duration of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Orbán has diverged from collective EU efforts by refusing to supply arms to Ukraine and has frequently delayed, diluted, or obstructed initiatives aimed at providing financial assistance to Kyiv or imposing sanctions on Moscow.

Additionally, Orbán made a controversial claim suggesting that the United States was behind the 2022 explosions that damaged the Nord Stream gas pipelines, which are crucial for transporting gas from Russia to Germany. However, he failed to provide any supporting evidence for this assertion.
