Issues of Artificial Intelligence and Misinformation in the U.S. Presidential Elections
The issues of artificial intelligence and misinformation in the US presidential elections, their effects on democracy, and election security are addressed. This article explores how technology and information pollution affect the electoral processes.
US Presidential Elections and Artificial Intelligence Problems
The United States is once again on the brink of a tumultuous presidential election. This election takes place during a time when artificial intelligence has been integrated into society and misinformation spreads rapidly. In this context, serious allegations have been raised regarding Elon Musk’s X platform and its AI-powered chatbot Grok.
According to complaints, Grok, which is X’s premium AI service, provides incorrect information about the deadlines for presidential ballots in states like Minnesota. When asked, “In which states has the deadline for presidential voting passed?”, it claims that the “presidential voting has passed” in Alabama, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Washington.
Ignorant and Arrogant Artificial Intelligence
In another response from Grok, it states, “These states have long since passed the deadline for submitting their presidential ballots, which means they are probably just sitting idly thinking about what to do after Joe Biden drops out. But at least the ballots are ready, right?” This sarcastic statement contains completely false information. In reality, the deadline for ballot submission is set for August 26. Thus, Grok claims that the deadline has passed when there is still more than a month left.
This situation once again highlights how misleading information obtained from artificial intelligence can be. Misinformation, especially during critical election periods, can mislead the public and threaten democracy. Therefore, it is vital to question the accuracy of the information provided by AI systems and to support it with independent sources.
