X Users Discover New AI Data Sharing Settings on the Platform

On Friday, multiple users of the platform X (formerly known as Twitter) observed a subtle yet significant change in the data settings related to its new artificial intelligence model. A fresh category has been introduced under the data sharing and privacy options, labeled Grok, which is the name of Elon Musk’s generative AI.

This new setting prompts users to consider whether they wish to share their posts, interactions, inputs, and results with Grok for the purposes of “training and fine-tuning”. Users have the option to opt-out by simply unchecking the box next to this prompt. Additionally, accounts can be made private as a further precaution; however, this setting adjustment can only be made via the desktop version, not the mobile app.

X Premium and Premium+ subscribers are granted the unique capability to utilize Grok’s assistance for search queries. As described on an X Help Center page, “Grok is here to help you with your search… while keeping you entertained and engaged.”

Introducing Grok: A New Era of AI

Musk’s Grok, developed in the wake of the explosive popularity of ChatGPT through xAI, is characterized as being “designed to answer nearly any question with a blend of wit and humor, while also delivering helpful and insightful responses.” According to a recent blog post, xAI has pre-trained Grok “on a variety of text data” sourced from public databases, although it has yet to undergo training using data from X itself.

The incorporation of X data into Grok’s training regimen is expected to enhance its comprehension of human language, cultivate its sense of humor, and ensure it remains politically neutral. These changes to the settings come shortly after Musk announced his ambitious goal of training Grok to become “the most powerful AI in the world” on advanced supercomputers located in Memphis, Tennessee. He further revealed that xAI managed to initiate Grok’s training just 19 days after its initial installation.
