Warner Bros. Discovery Sues NBA Over Media Rights Dispute

In a significant move, Warner Bros. Discovery has filed a lawsuit against the National Basketball Association (NBA) in an effort to compel the league to accept its proposal to match Amazon’s lucrative bid for broadcasting rights. This legal action was initiated on Friday in the New York State Supreme Court.

Earlier this week, the NBA revealed that it had successfully negotiated media rights agreements with major broadcasting giants, including Disney, Comcast, and Amazon. These agreements are slated to commence in the 2025-26 season and are projected to deliver a staggering $77 billion to the NBA over the next 11 years. As a result, Warner Bros. Discovery, a key current rights holder, stands to lose its association with the league at the conclusion of the upcoming season.

In a public statement following the filing of the lawsuit, Warner Bros. Discovery expressed its position: “Given the NBA’s unjustified rejection of our matching of a third-party offer, we have taken legal action to enforce our rights. We strongly believe this is not just our contractual right, but also in the best interest of fans who want to keep watching our industry-leading NBA content.”

In response, NBA spokesman Mike Bass commented, “Warner Bros. Discovery’s claims are without merit, and our lawyers will address them accordingly.”

According to sources familiar with the negotiations, Amazon entered the fray during Warner Bros. Discovery’s exclusive negotiating window, which was initiated at the request of Warner Bros. Discovery itself. However, during this critical period, Warner Bros. Discovery hesitated to meet the NBA’s demands for last-minute adjustments to its proposal, ultimately leading to the closure of the exclusive window without reaching an agreement.

Despite ongoing discussions between the two entities, Warner Bros. Discovery, which has been broadcasting NBA games via its TNT network since the 1980s, found itself sidelined as the NBA swiftly turned to alternative partners. Company executives privately maintained their intention to invoke their matching rights as outlined in the existing nine-year agreement.
