The Romanian Defence Ministry has confirmed the discovery of debris from Russian drones near the town of Plauru, which is located along Romania’s border with Ukraine. This revelation comes as tensions escalate in the region due to ongoing military actions.

Lieutenant General Mykola Oleschuk, the Commander of Ukraine’s Air Force, reported that Ukrainian forces successfully intercepted 25 Russian drones overnight; however, three of those drones crossed into Romanian airspace before being neutralized. Fragments of one of these drones were located near Plauru, directly across the Danube River from Ukraine’s strategic port town of Izmail. This port has been targeted by Russian drone strikes for the second consecutive night, raising alarms about regional security.

Condemnation from Romanian Officials

Romanian officials have expressed their outrage over these developments. Romanian Foreign Minister Luminita Odobescu took to social media platform X to state, “More heinous attacks have been perpetrated by Russia against Ukrainian civilian infrastructure. Debris has been found on Romanian territory. We have informed and are coordinating with our Allies on this matter. Romania strongly condemns these irresponsible actions.”

Local Impact and Reactions

Residents in and around Plauru have reported feeling the intense impact of the drone strikes targeting the port of Izmail. Local resident Costică Tănase remarked, “There were a lot of them and with a strong impact. The drones we experienced in August or earlier were heavy, but not like these. The ones on Tuesday night had a phenomenally high charge.” Another resident, Florica, described seeing a peculiar light moving erratically, suggesting the possibility of surveillance activity, stating, “There was something like a light that went to and fro, as if it was following something. I think it had a spyglass or something.”

Bucharest’s Response to the Strikes

In light of these attacks, Romania has firmly stated that military actions occurring near its borders pose a direct threat to national security. The Defence Ministry has reiterated that targeting civilians constitutes a war crime. In response, two Finnish F-18 fighter jets, along with the Romanian Air Police Service, have been deployed to monitor the situation and safeguard Romanian airspace. Officials have assured that searches for debris are ongoing, and the locations of the fallen drones have been noted as being away from populated areas, with no damage to infrastructure reported.

Meanwhile, NATO officials have commented on the situation, stating that they possess no evidence indicating an intentional Russian attack on Romanian territory. However, they characterized the actions as irresponsible and potentially dangerous, underscoring the need for vigilance in the region.
