At just 17 years old, Racheal Kundananji took a bold step into the world of soccer, donning track spikes for her very first practice with a local team. Growing up in the Zambian copper-mining region, her athletic experience had been largely confined to track and field. Now, she found herself sprinting across a rough, uneven patch of dirt that seemed more suited for off-road biking than for the beautiful game of soccer. Despite the challenging conditions, Kundananji showcased a raw talent that was evident to everyone around her.

Risto Mupaka, a coach for her team, Konkola Queens, recalled her early days. “She would run very fast,” he noted, highlighting her impressive speed. However, he also pointed out that “turning was a problem,” indicating the learning curve she faced as a newcomer to the sport.

Despite these initial challenges, it didn’t take long for Kundananji to adapt to the game. After just four training sessions, she was ready to make her competitive debut. In that first match, she made an astonishing impact by scoring three goals, signaling her potential as a rising star.

Fast forward seven years, and the 24-year-old Kundananji is now poised to lead Zambia’s national team into the prestigious Paris Olympics. It’s a remarkable journey that few could have imagined back when she was just a teenager trying to find her footing in a new sport.

Today, Kundananji holds the distinction of being one of the most valuable women’s soccer players in the world. In February, Bay F.C., a newly established team in the National Women’s Soccer League based in San Francisco, made headlines by paying a staggering $788,000 to acquire her. This transfer fee set a record, marking the highest amount ever paid for a female player.
