Netanyahu’s Washington Visit: A Complex Reality
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recent journey to Washington was highly anticipated, aimed at strengthening the diminishing support for Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza both domestically and internationally. However, his visit was soon overshadowed by the distressing news from Israel regarding the recovery of several hostages’ bodies from the Palestinian territory.
As Mr. Netanyahu prepared for crucial discussions with President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris on Thursday, he had just delivered an hour-long address to Congress, where he sought to justify Israel’s military actions in Gaza. Yet, back in Israel, the contrast between the enthusiastic applause he received from U.S. lawmakers and the grim situation at home was starkly evident on the front pages of Hebrew-language newspapers that day.
The daily newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, a prominent publication, illustrated this dissonance by splitting its front page horizontally. The upper half featured portraits of four captives whose bodies had been recovered, while the lower half highlighted Mr. Netanyahu’s speech. Subsequently, a fifth body was identified by Israeli authorities, confirming that all five individuals had tragically lost their lives during the Hamas-led assault on southern Israel on October 7, which initiated the current conflict.
Many citizens in Israel are urging Mr. Netanyahu to consider a cease-fire that would facilitate the release of the remaining hostages still held in Gaza. Observers noted the striking gap between what they described as an almost celebratory atmosphere in Congress and the pervasive sentiment of governmental failure in Israel. The war has not only expanded to multiple fronts but has also left the leadership appearing directionless about the path forward. This divide has been mirrored in the U.S. Congress, with numerous Democrats choosing to boycott the speech, while protests erupted outside the Capitol, drawing thousands of demonstrators.
As Ben-Dror Yemini poignantly remarked in Thursday’s Yedioth Ahronoth, “It was a speech devoid of disappointments or good tidings. Never, ever was there such a large chasm between high words and contradictory actions.”
During his address to Congress, Mr. Netanyahu framed the conflict as a critical battle for the survival of the Jewish state. Notably, he devoted little attention to the extensive casualties among Palestinian civilians resulting from Israel’s military campaign aimed at dismantling Hamas. While many Israelis resonated with the broader themes of his speech, reflecting their own sentiments, there was widespread criticism regarding the critical issues he chose to overlook.
