In Memoriam: Sylvain Saudan, the Pioneer of Extreme Skiing

Sylvain Saudan, celebrated as the “skier of the impossible,” passed away on July 14 at his residence in Les Houches, France. He was 87 years old. His longtime partner, Marie-José Valençot, confirmed that the cause of death was a heart attack.

Saudan’s extraordinary life was marked by a series of breathtaking descents down some of the world’s steepest and most inaccessible slopes, which left many in awe and some in disbelief. His ability to navigate these perilous terrains not only challenged the limits of skiing but also posed serious risks that could lead to life-threatening consequences. As he himself remarked, “One mistake, you die.”

Beginning his remarkable journey in 1967, when he fearlessly skied down the Spencer Couloir on the Aiguille de Blaitière mountain in France—a daunting 55-degree slope that felt akin to a free fall—Saudan dedicated his life to redefining the sport of skiing. His descents in the Alps, the Himalayas, and beyond helped establish a new genre of skiing: extreme skiing, now commonly referred to as steep skiing.

For many enthusiasts drawn to this daring sport, the thrill lies in traveling to remote peaks, often accessed by helicopter, with a blend of fear and exhilaration as they gaze down the daunting slopes. Saudan’s philosophy on life and death was both refreshing and profound; he once stated, “Death? It is there for everyone, but fortunately we forget about it. If you only look at the negative side, you don’t move forward.”

His legacy as a trailblazer in extreme skiing will be remembered, inspiring future generations to embrace the mountains with both caution and courage.
