Exploring Japan: A Family-Friendly Adventure

Japan, renowned for its vibrant cities like Tokyo and Kyoto, is often celebrated for its magnificent shrines, ancient temples, and rich cultural heritage. However, this fascinating country is also a powerhouse of pop culture, particularly as the birthplace of beloved anime, manga, and the iconic Pokémon franchise. Families seeking fun-filled activities will find a plethora of options, ranging from honing ninja skills to meeting the cuddly Snorlax. According to Ramesh Krishan, affectionately known as RamKy and the founder of Japan Unfiltered, “the beauty of Japan lies in its ability to captivate children at every turn.” He adds, “Whether it’s a whimsical capsule toy dispenser, an intriguing karaoke bar with delightful desserts, or the cheerful tunes echoing through train stations, there’s always something to enchant young visitors.” Here are six must-visit destinations perfect for a family-oriented tour of Japan’s most popular cities.

Tokyo

Kirby Café

The Kirby Café, nestled at the base of the towering Tokyo Skytree, is dedicated to the lovable pink character that first captured hearts on the Nintendo Game Boy in 1992. Securing a reservation here is no small feat; it’s often likened to winning front-row seats to a sold-out concert. Reservations for the upcoming month open online on the 10th at 6 p.m. Japan Standard Time. However, due to high demand, the website frequently crashes. To ease the process, you can utilize the Kirby Café Bot, an online service that can snag reservations for $7.50 per person for up to eight guests.

Once inside, diners are treated to a feast for the senses, featuring an array of Kirby-themed dishes and vibrant decor. Enjoy whimsical Kirby burgers nestled in cheerful pink buns, playful pizzas adorned with star-shaped fried eggs, and Whispy Woods feast plates that present Kirby’s rival, an apple tree, with potato salad served in a ramekin disguised as the tree’s trunk. As a tip, consider combining your meal with a visit to the Skytree. Standing at a staggering 2,080 feet, it holds the title of the world’s tallest free-standing tower, offering breathtaking 360-degree views of Tokyo from its observation deck.

Location: Kirby Café, Tokyo Skytree Town, Solamachi, East Yard 4F, 1-1-2 Oshiage, Sumida City; Menu Prices: entrees range from 1,200 yen to 3,980 yen (approximately $7.50 to $25). Tokyo Skytree Admission: adults from 1,800 yen; children aged 12 to 17 from 1,400 yen; children aged 6 to 11 from 850 yen.

Pokémon Center Tokyo DX

The Pokémon Center Tokyo DX, located in the bustling Nihonboshi business district, is one of the largest of its kind in Tokyo. The standout attraction here is the Pokémon Café, another highly sought-after dining experience that requires reservations to be made precisely 31 days in advance at 6 p.m. Japan Standard Time. For those who prefer convenience, a service called Reserve Japan can handle the booking for a fee of $24.90 per guest—your children will certainly appreciate this hassle-free option.

At the café, guests can sip on refreshing, Pikachu-themed lemon soda floats and frothy lattes served in adorable red and white Pokéball cups. The menu features delightful dishes such as Snorlax’s Full-Belly Naptime Lunch Plate, which presents a shrimp rice pilaf in a dish fashioned to resemble the sleepy Pokémon, along with grilled chicken, crispy fried potatoes, and a salad embellished with carrot cutouts shaped like Zs, mimicking Snorlax’s snores. After satisfying your taste buds, take time to explore the center’s extensive merchandise collection, boasting plush toys, sparkling iPhone cases, travel accessories like eye masks and neck pillows, and even quirky food items shaped like Pokémon.

Location: Pokémon Center Tokyo DX, Nihombashi Takashimaya S.C. East Building (5F) 2-11-2 Nihombashi, Chuo-ku; Menu Prices: entrees range from 1,540 yen to 2,420 yen.
