Netanyahu Defends Israel’s Military Campaign Amid Protests

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivered a staunch defense of Israel’s military operations in Gaza during his address to Congress yesterday. His remarks highlighted the growing divisions within Washington regarding a conflict that has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of Palestinians.

Surprisingly, Netanyahu refrained from discussing the status of a cease-fire agreement that had been under negotiation between Hamas and Israel for several weeks. He framed the ongoing conflict against Hamas as part of a broader struggle involving Iran and the United States, asserting, “We’re not only protecting ourselves; we’re protecting you.” He emphasized a shared sense of purpose, stating, “Our enemies are your enemies; our fight is your fight; and our victory will be your victory.”

However, the atmosphere in the House chamber reflected a notable erosion of bipartisan support for Israel. While Republicans expressed their approval with loud applause, a significant number of Democratic members chose to boycott the speech. Notably, Representative Rashida Tlaib, a Democrat from Michigan and the first Palestinian American to serve in Congress, held up a sign reading “war criminal” in protest as Netanyahu spoke.

Outside the Capitol, over 5,000 pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered to voice their opposition to Netanyahu’s address, calling for the United States to cease its military support for Israel. The protest escalated in intensity, with some demonstrators clashing with law enforcement and others burning an effigy of the prime minister.

In a provocative statement, Netanyahu labeled the antiwar protesters as “Iran’s useful idiots.” He also took the opportunity to praise both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. Following his address, he is scheduled to meet with both leaders, as well as Vice President Kamala Harris, later this week.
