On Tuesday, a significant explosion followed by a fire occurred at the renowned Jose Cuervo tequila factory located in the heart of Tequila, Mexico. Andrés Chávez, a spokesman for the local government, confirmed the alarming incident during a brief phone interview late Tuesday night.
While there were various local reports suggesting potential casualties and injuries, Mr. Chávez stated that he was currently unable to verify these claims. The explosion reportedly took place in the city center, as covered by the Mexican news outlet Milenio. Tequila is situated approximately 40 miles by road northwest of Guadalajara in the western state of Jalisco.
Tequila’s mayor, José Alfonso Magallanes, took to social media to inform the public that emergency responders, including firefighters, were still actively engaged at the scene and that the situation had yet to be brought under control.
As of Tuesday night, representatives for Jose Cuervo had not responded to inquiries regarding the incident. Additionally, a woman answering calls at the Tequila fire department indicated that she was not authorized to provide comments on the matter.
