Wildfires Rage Across Europe Amidst Extreme Heat

Severe wildfires, fueled by soaring temperatures, continue to wreak havoc across various regions in Europe, with significant blazes reported in Portugal, North Macedonia, and Bulgaria.

In Portugal, at least 14 individuals, including 11 brave firefighters, have been hospitalized for smoke inhalation following a fire that erupted in a town near the capital, Lisbon. Local media sources indicate that the fire ignited shortly after noon but was contained within a few hours, thanks to the rapid response of emergency services. Over 300 firefighters, supported by 93 vehicles and eight water-dropping aircraft, were mobilized to combat the flames. Unfortunately, an equestrian center suffered damage, leading to the evacuation of 30 horses to ensure their safety.

Meanwhile, in North Macedonia, seven wildfires are still actively burning, with firefighting teams tirelessly battling the flames for nearly two weeks. The most severe situation is occurring at Serta Mountain, located between the cities of Stip and Negotino, where approximately 30 kilometers of land have been consumed by the inferno. In response to the escalating crisis, authorities have deployed two police helicopters, an army helicopter, 60 special service police officers, and 100 army personnel to assist in the firefighting efforts. The deployment of additional helicopters and aircraft, facilitated by the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, has also been increased to help combat the fires.

In Bulgaria, wildfires in the municipality of Bolyarovo, which borders Turkey, have been brought under control after seven arduous days of firefighting. Local media reports indicate that the blaze affected around 73 kilometers of land, causing devastating damage to the village of Voden, where many residents have tragically lost their homes. The situation in Voden remains precarious due to high temperatures and strong winds, complicating recovery efforts. On a positive note, the first seven mobile homes for those in urgent need arrived on Sunday, with more expected to follow. These mobile units are designed to be furnished with beds, kitchenware, and essential household items.

Additionally, wildfires continue to burn in Greece, particularly near the border with Bulgaria, affecting the Sandanski villages of Petrovo and Goleshovo, which are located less than 2 kilometers apart. Foresters and firefighters are working diligently to create clearings aimed at preventing the flames from advancing into the Slavyanka Mountain area, which is home to the Ali Botush Reserve. The situation along the Bulgaria-Greece border is being closely monitored, and the firefighting unit in Blagoevgrad stands ready to be activated at the request of the Fire Safety and Civil Protection General Directorate.
