In a devastating incident in the remote Kencho Shacha Gozdi district of southern Ethiopia, at least 146 individuals have lost their lives due to catastrophic mudslides triggered by heavy rainfall. The toll includes young children and pregnant women, highlighting the tragedy’s profound impact on families.
Local authorities have reported that as rescue operations progress, the death toll continues to rise. Kassahun Abayneh, the head of the communications office in the Gofa Zone, noted that the area is grappling with the consequences of two significant mudslides, with the most recent occurring on Monday morning.
The initial wave of mudslides struck on the previous day, prompting search efforts in the steep, challenging terrain. Rescue workers have managed to pull at least five survivors from the debris, offering a glimmer of hope amidst the grim situation.
Ayele, a local resident, recounted the harrowing scenes at the disaster site, stating, “There are children who are hugging corpses, having lost their entire family, including their mother, father, brother, and sister, due to this tragic accident.” This heart-wrenching image underscores the profound grief and loss that has befallen the community.
Landslides are unfortunately a common occurrence during Ethiopia’s rainy season, which typically begins in July and extends until mid-September. The current season has proven particularly devastating, as heavy rains have saturated the soil, leading to these lethal mudslides.
