Political Turmoil in France: A New Prime Minister Picked, But Rejected

A coalition of left-wing parties in France made a surprising move on Tuesday by selecting a relatively unknown civil servant, Lucie Castets, as their candidate for Prime Minister. This decision came after weeks of intense negotiations, as the recent snap parliamentary elections have left the nation in a state of political deadlock.

However, President Emmanuel Macron swiftly dismissed the coalition’s choice. In his first public remarks since the elections, he stated that he would not appoint a new government until at least mid-August. Furthermore, he indicated that his current cabinet would continue operating in a caretaker role during the upcoming Paris Summer Olympics, which are set to commence this week.

According to the French Constitution, it is solely the president’s prerogative to appoint the Prime Minister and the cabinet. While the president’s selection is expected to reflect the political landscape of the National Assembly, there is no constitutional deadline mandating when this decision must be made.

The left-wing coalition, known as the New Popular Front, released a statement affirming their support for Ms. Castets, who is 37 years old. She has held various positions within the French treasury and the anti-money laundering unit, and is currently responsible for financial matters at Paris City Hall.

  • Ms. Castets is a graduate of the prestigious École Nationale d’Administration, a school recognized for producing many of France’s top civil servants.
  • She is also actively involved in an association of civil servants that has voiced opposition to some of President Macron’s policies.

The New Popular Front emphasized their commitment, stating, “We will stand fully by her side in the government that she will lead,” highlighting their belief in her capabilities to navigate the complex political landscape.
