Escalating Conflict in Khan Younis
The Israeli military ordered residents to evacuate a significant portion of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip on Monday. In a series of airstrikes that followed, local health officials reported that scores of individuals were killed and hundreds more were injured, further compounding the suffering of a city already ravaged by nearly ten months of conflict.
The military stated that it was intensifying operations in Khan Younis due to reports that Hamas was attempting to regroup in the area. They claimed that Hamas had utilized part of what was designated as a humanitarian zone to launch rockets toward Israel. Earlier on Monday, the military had warned civilians to evacuate from “specific areas of Khan Younis,” effectively reducing the safe zones available for those displaced by the ongoing war.
According to the Gazan health ministry, 70 bodies had been transported to Nasser Hospital, with at least 200 additional individuals sustaining injuries—numbers that have yet to be independently verified. Local authorities fear that many more individuals are likely trapped under the rubble of destroyed buildings. The Palestine Red Crescent reported that its teams in the region had treated at least 12 deceased individuals and 50 wounded.
Dr. Mohammed Saqer, the director general of nursing at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, described the dire situation, stating that hundreds of injured individuals, including men, women, children, and the elderly, had been admitted to the facility. He lamented the severe shortages of essential supplies such as mattresses, blankets, and syringes. “The situation is appalling,” Dr. Saqer remarked in an interview, noting that some injuries necessitated amputations, while others involved severe burns.
The Israeli military asserted that the evacuation order for eastern Khan Younis was issued because they were “about to forcefully operate against” Hamas in that area. They claimed to have targeted over 30 sites, stating that these included locations from which projectiles had been launched toward Nirim in southern Israel that same day.
