Tragic Shooting Incident in Croatia
A gunman has tragically taken the lives of at least six individuals and inflicted injuries on six others during a shooting spree at a facility for the elderly and infirm in Croatia. This somber event unfolded on Monday morning, prompting an immediate response from law enforcement. Police Chief Nikola Milina addressed the media in the afternoon, detailing the incident and confirming that the assailant utilized a handgun.
The devastating attack occurred in Daruvar, a picturesque spa town with a population of approximately 10,000, located in the central region of the country. This town is situated about 100 kilometers (62 miles) southeast of Zagreb, the capital city of Croatia. Among the victims, five residents and one staff member were confirmed dead, with five succumbing to their injuries at the scene and one later passing away in the hospital.
Chief Milina revealed that the handgun used in the attack was not registered, raising concerns about gun ownership and control in the country. In the wake of this horrifying incident, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic expressed his shock and sorrow on social media platform X, stating he was “appalled” by the senseless killings. He extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and to those who sustained injuries during the assault.
In a swift reaction to the tragedy, President Zoran Milanovic called for more stringent gun control measures. He condemned the attack as a “savage, unprecedented crime” in a post on Facebook, highlighting the urgent need for reforms in firearm regulations.
While the police have not yet disclosed the identity of the alleged shooter, Chief Milina confirmed that the suspect was a member of a military police unit and was already known to the authorities. This revelation has sparked further discussions about public safety and the effectiveness of existing security measures in the country.
