Netanyahu’s Strategy Amid Shifting Political Landscape

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel is not expected to alter his strategy regarding the ongoing Gaza conflict in the immediate future, even following President Joe Biden‘s decision to step aside from the electoral race. Analysts suggest that while Netanyahu might privately welcome the prospect of a new administration, he remains constrained by the current political dynamics.

For the next six months, Netanyahu must navigate his policies while still collaborating with President Biden, who will continue to influence key aspects of U.S.-Israel relations. This includes the supply of military munitions and the level of diplomatic support at the United Nations, especially during a period of heightened global scrutiny of Israel’s actions.

“Netanyahu undoubtedly gains from a politically weakened Biden, particularly as the Israeli right holds the president accountable for perceived restrictions on Israel’s military operations,” noted Mazal Mualem, an Israeli political commentator and biographer of Netanyahu. “However, it is crucial to remember that Biden is still in power, and Netanyahu requires his support,” she added.

The relationship between Netanyahu and the Biden administration has been fraught with tension, particularly concerning the intensity of Israel’s airstrikes in Gaza and the humanitarian aid reaching Palestinian civilians. Under increasing U.S. pressure, Israel has adjusted its military strategy, moderating its campaign in Gaza since January and avoiding a potential ground invasion along its border with Lebanon. This is significant given the ongoing exchanges of missile strikes with Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed Lebanese militia allied with Hamas.

As the situation continues to evolve, the implications of these diplomatic challenges and military engagements remain profound, shaping not only the immediate conflict but also the future trajectory of Israeli-Palestinian relations.
