Changes in Apple’s iPhone 17 Design

Famous Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo shared striking information about the plans for the iPhone 17 series. The iPhone 17 series is not expected to be released until 2025, but rumors about the iPhone 17 Slim model have been circulating for a while. According to Kuo’s statements, a significant change in the materials used in the logic board of the iPhone 17 is planned. Specifically, this model will not feature resin-coated copper (RCC) material.

Kuo first announced Apple’s intention to use RCC at the end of last year. The use of RCC could significantly reduce the thickness of the motherboard, providing a slimmer design. The space gained could be utilized for a larger battery module or enhancements to other features. However, when Apple tested prototype devices using RCC material, it discovered that this material did not meet the company’s high-quality standards. During testing, it was reported that these prototypes were too fragile to withstand drop tests.

Kuo’s statement on the X platform included, “Because it does not meet Apple’s high-quality requirements, the new iPhone 17 in 2025 will not use RCC as the PCB motherboard material.” This situation implies that the release of the iPhone 17 Slim could be delayed. However, there is no definitive information on whether Apple will conclude its research on RCC material.

Apple is a company accustomed to changing its design plans in order to maintain product quality. For instance, a few years ago, Apple invested over a billion dollars in sapphire screens to make the next-generation iPhones scratch-resistant. However, the supporting company for this process went bankrupt. Despite this temporary setback, Apple introduced the Ceramic Shield technology, which is extremely resistant to scratches, with the iPhone 12.

As a result, Apple is continuously looking for new ways to improve its iPhones. Considering that the company is also exploring alternative methods to enhance battery life, it can be confidently said that it will continue to strive for other solutions even if RCC is abandoned.
