Explore the poignant journey of a Ukrainian soldier as he finds a rare moment of peace amid the chaos of war. This reflective narrative delves into the emotional struggles and resilience of those on the frontlines, offering a glimpse into their humanity.
A Day of Reflection Amidst War
On a rare rest day from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Volodymyr Androshchuk decided to indulge in a sushi outing. In a modestly priced car he had recently acquired, he drove his squad leader, Volodymyr Dziubynsky, to a nearby supermarket, just a short distance from the eastern front. They enjoyed their meal at a safe house, sharing a small bottle of Cognac, an act that felt like a celebration amidst the chaos.
“We were so happy, it was almost surreal,” recalled Dziubynsky, reflecting on that moment of respite.
However, as the night wore on, concerns crept into Androshchuk’s voice during a phone call. Both his girlfriend and sister noticed a shift in his demeanor. He and Dziubynsky were members of Ukraine’s elite 95th Air Assault Brigade, and the next day’s mission against Russian forces weighed heavily on his mind. In encrypted conversations, he expressed his worries about the mission, which would take place in an open terrain devoid of trees and cover.
At just 22 years old, Androshchuk was still below the draft age, which had been set at 27. His background was not in military service but rather in athletics, where he had trained intensively as a decathlete—a demanding sport that encompasses ten different running, jumping, and throwing events. His aspirations were high; he aimed to represent Ukraine in the 2024 Olympics in Paris or the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.

“It was his dream to compete at the highest level,” said Oleksiy Kasyanov, 38, who served as the general secretary of Ukraine’s track and field federation and was previously the national decathlon coach.
Yet, by the time Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, injuries had sidelined Androshchuk from his athletic pursuits. In a remarkable turn of fate, he chose to volunteer for military service, donning the camouflage of a battlefield unit instead of the blue and yellow of his national sports uniform.
