Reviving the Interstate Inn: A Journey of Passion and Transformation

In 2022, while visiting a friend in the quaint town of Stephenville, Texas, Lisa Lennox stumbled upon a hidden gem: the Interstate Inn. This motel, located on a bustling highway just an hour west of Fort Worth, had certainly seen better days. Known for its budget-friendly rates of $40 a night, the property was infamous among local law enforcement for its questionable reputation. The building was in dire need of repairs, including new plumbing and wiring, and the presence of asbestos required extensive remediation.

Despite its state of disrepair, Ms. Lennox felt an instant connection to the motel’s quirky design, characterized by a strikingly large sloped roof that exuded a distinct Space Age vibe. “These motels are very Americana,” she remarked. “They feature unique architectural designs, but unfortunately, many are falling apart and facing demolition.”

With no prior experience in the hospitality industry, Ms. Lennox relied on her extensive travels to inform her vision of what makes a hotel room truly inviting. She took the leap and purchased the motel in that same year. To further prepare herself, she enrolled in an online hotel management course at Cornell University. By the end of September, her ambitious plans include not only the revitalization of the 35-room Interstate Inn but also the opening of another motel alongside her siblings. A third property is already in the works for the following year.

Ms. Lennox is not alone in her venture; motels are experiencing a renaissance. According to Kimberly Walker, managing partner at Nomada Hotel Group, which operates three motels in California, there is a burgeoning trend she refers to as “motel culture.” This movement encompasses a growing number of individuals interested in purchasing and refurbishing motels, as well as a new generation of travelers—particularly young people—who have developed a fondness for these classic establishments.

Lisa Lennox’s story is a testament to the charm and potential of motels, standing as a beacon for those looking to breathe new life into these once-beloved American icons.
