Tragic Toll of Israeli Airstrikes in Gaza

In a devastating escalation of violence, an Israeli airstrike on two refugee camps in central Gaza has resulted in the deaths of thirteen individuals, as reported by the health ministry of the territory. Among the deceased are a woman and three children, who were transported to the nearby Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital by Palestinian ambulance teams.

This recent strike follows previous attacks on the Nuseirat camp earlier this week, which claimed the lives of seven people, including a heavily pregnant woman. In a heart-wrenching moment, emergency workers at the Al-Awda Hospital in northern Gaza successfully managed to save the newborn baby, delivering him despite the chaos of the airstrike. The infant, whose name remains undisclosed, is currently stable but has suffered from oxygen deprivation and is now being cared for in an incubator. Dr. Khalil Dajran confirmed that the baby boy’s father was also wounded in the same attack but miraculously survived.

Ceasefire Talks and International Mediation

As the situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, ceasefire negotiations are ongoing. International mediators are striving to establish a phased agreement between Israel and Hamas, which aims to end the hostilities and facilitate the release of at least 120 hostages currently held in Gaza.

On Friday, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken provided an update on the negotiations, noting that a ceasefire deal between Hamas and Israel, which includes the release of Israeli hostages, is “inside the 10-yard line.” However, he cautioned that achieving an agreement in the final stages is often the most challenging part of the process.

International Court’s Stance on Israeli Occupation

In a significant development, the United Nations’ International Court of Justice in The Hague issued a non-binding opinion declaring that Israel’s presence in the occupied Palestinian territories is unlawful. The court stated that Israel cannot claim sovereignty over these territories and is actively impeding the Palestinians’ right to self-determination. In an unprecedented move, the court urged an immediate halt to settlement construction and called for the dismantling of existing settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Although Israel did not send a legal team to the court hearings, it submitted written comments, arguing that the questions posed to the court were biased and failed to adequately address Israel’s security concerns.
