Sundance Institute Narrows Search for New Festival Location
The Sundance Institute made a significant announcement on Friday, revealing that its search for a new home for its renowned film festival has been narrowed down to six promising finalists: Atlanta, Cincinnati, Boulder, Colorado, Louisville, Kentucky, Santa Fe, New Mexico, and its current location, Park City, Utah, which is considering a partnership with the neighboring Salt Lake City.
For the past four decades, Sundance has become synonymous with the picturesque snowy landscapes of Park City, where its influential film festival has taken place annually. Back in April, the Institute expressed its intention to review potential relocation options as it approaches the end of its current contract with Park City, which will conclude after the 2026 festival, traditionally held in January. Regardless of the new location, the festival’s timing will remain unchanged.
The 10-day event, known for showcasing groundbreaking independent films, often stretches Park City’s resources to their limits, leading to congested traffic and inflated rental prices during the festival period.
When evaluating the finalists, Sundance emphasized its focus on logistical considerations, infrastructure capabilities, and each city’s commitment to fostering artistic endeavors. The organization also assessed how well these cities could support and enhance their local film communities.
Eugene Hernandez, Sundance’s festival director and director of public programming, stated, “Each of these cities boasts a vibrant creative ecosystem, whether it is emerging or well-established, and they have proven their ability to nurture artistic expression through robust support for the arts.”
Founded by Robert Redford in 1981 and relocating to Park City in 1985, Sundance has grown to become the leading festival for independent cinema. A pivotal moment in its history occurred in 1989 when Steven Soderbergh’s groundbreaking film, Sex, Lies and Videotape, premiered, marking a transformative era for independent filmmakers.
As the festival prepares for its 2024 edition, it has received an unprecedented number of submissions, with over 17,000 entries from 153 countries, reflecting the growing global interest in independent film.
