Reports have surfaced indicating unauthorized attempts to access creditors’ Mt. Gox accounts during the ongoing bitcoin (BTC) repayments process. Reddit users have shared their concerns, with some users receiving up to 22 failed login notifications as of Thursday.
Reddit User Reports: One Reddit user posted on the r/mtgoxinsolvency forum, “Just received 15 notifications for account log in. Now can’t get into my account. Is Mt. Gox under attack??? Thank god at this point you can’t do payee info change. Still getting log in emails. 22 so far.” More than fifteen other users confirmed similar login notification incidents.
Possible Account Takeover: The repeated login attempts suggest that an unknown individual may be trying to gain unauthorized access to Mt. Gox accounts, potentially to withdraw any received BTC.
Claims Portal Maintenance: The Mt. Gox claims portal is currently “temporarily down for maintenance” as of Thursday, according to the site’s status update.
Security Measures: Some users pointed out that accounts protected with 2FA (two-factor authentication) are likely safe from such login attacks. User u/Joohansson mentioned, “As long as you have 2FA, you should ‘hopefully’ be fine.”
Bitcoin Repayments: In early July, the defunct crypto exchange Mt. Gox initiated the process of repaying creditors affected by a 2014 hack. Traders are expected to receive over $9 billion worth of BTC and $73 million of bitcoin cash (BCH) in the coming months.
