The EuroGames, Europe’s largest LGBTQ+ sporting event, commenced with a vibrant opening ceremony at Vienna’s Karlsplatz square on Wednesday. The event is set to host 4,000 athletes hailing from 50 nations, engaging in 31 diverse sports disciplines such as tennis, badminton, football, and roller derby. Notably, this year marks the inaugural occasion of Austria hosting the prestigious games.

Thomas Nobis, the coordinator of the tennis tournament, lauded the EuroGames for its unwavering commitment to inclusivity. He emphasized the significance of providing a secure and welcoming space for the LGBTQ+ community while also extending a warm invitation to all individuals to partake in and support the event.

Renowned LGBTQ+ icon Conchita Wurst, celebrated for winning the Eurovision Song Contest, graced the event as the headliner, extending a heartfelt welcome to all participants in Vienna. The EuroGames made their debut in 1992 in The Hague and have since been hosted in various cities. Vienna’s support for the event includes a generous donation of €150,000 and offering complimentary access to numerous sporting venues.
