MSNBC’s Unique Approach to Covering the Republican National Convention

MSNBC’s prime-time coverage of the Republican National Convention has taken an innovative twist, offering viewers a different perspective on the event. While the typical TV setup of anchors at a desk overlooking the convention floor creates a familiar scene, MSNBC’s approach this year has been anything but ordinary.

Despite the grand political spectacle unfolding below, anchors like Rachel Maddow, Nicolle Wallace, Jen Psaki, and Joy Reid have not been physically present inside the convention hall. In a surprising move, they have been broadcasting from a studio in Midtown Manhattan, with a live feed of the convention floor projected onto an LED screen behind them.

This unconventional setup, described by some veteran television news producers as unorthodox, has resulted in a visually striking effect. At a glance, it appears as though MSNBC’s top anchors are on-site, providing real-time coverage of the convention proceedings.

Last week, MSNBC made the decision that its high-profile personalities would not be traveling to Milwaukee for the convention. Instead, the network opted for on-the-ground anchoring by sending Stephanie Ruhle, the 11 p.m. host, who arrived on Tuesday, and Katy Tur, a daytime host known for her investigative reporting and analysis. Additionally, several journalists from NBC News, the network’s corporate counterpart, have been actively reporting from Milwaukee to provide comprehensive coverage.
