New Integration Requirements for Asylum Seekers in Austria
The Austrian Interior Minister, Gerhard Karner, has unveiled a series of new initiatives aimed at enhancing the integration of asylum seekers in Austria. These measures are designed to provide refugees with a strong foundation in Austrian values and social norms.
Work Requirement and Social Obligations
As part of the new requirements, asylum seekers will be obligated to engage in charitable work for federal, state, or local governments. This work can also be carried out in designated companies, nursing services, homeless shelters, or winter service initiatives.
Additionally, a “benefits card” trial will be expanded, enabling asylum seekers to receive support payments from the state. Non-compliance with the obligations may result in a reduction of financial support.
Catalogue of Obligations
Furthermore, asylum seekers will be provided with a comprehensive “catalogue of obligations” to familiarize them with Austrian culture, values, social etiquette, equality, democracy, and anti-Semitism.
