An influential government body gave strong support Thursday to accelerate efforts in dealing with climate change, aligning with the new British government’s plans to revitalize the economy. The Climate Change Committee warned that the country is not on track to meet its 2030 emissions reduction target of 68% compared to 1990 levels, with a legal requirement to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

The committee emphasized that urgent action is needed, stating that “the new government will have to act fast to hit the country’s commitments.” Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government aims to speed up the development of wind and solar farms, along with initiatives like replacing natural gas boilers with electric-powered heat pumps in homes.

Mr. Starmer believes that addressing climate change will not only benefit the environment but also stimulate the British economy, which has been facing stagnation. The government has swiftly approved three large solar farms and appointed Chris Stark, former chief executive of the committee, to lead the clean energy efforts.

In addition, Energy and Net Zero Minister Ed Miliband is implementing changes to planning rules to facilitate the construction of land-based wind farms in England, signaling a significant shift towards sustainable energy practices.
