US President Joe Biden has reiterated his determination to pursue his re-election campaign for the upcoming presidential election in November, despite facing mounting pressure to step down due to concerns about his age. In a recent televised interview, the 81-year-old president expressed confidence in his ability to carry out his duties, stating, “I’ve been doing this a long time. The idea that I’m the old guy. I am, I am old, but I’m only three years older than [Donald] Trump.”
Biden emphasized that his mental acuity remains strong and urged voters to evaluate his performance over the past three-and-a-half years of his administration. When asked about resuming his campaign efforts, Biden responded, “I’m on the horse. Where have you been?”
Despite calls from some Democrats and prominent party donors for him to withdraw from the presidential ticket, Biden is determined to press on. Criticism of his candidacy intensified following a challenging TV debate with Donald Trump and a series of verbal slip-ups, including mistakenly referring to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The ongoing debate about Biden’s election prospects and fitness for office has dominated the media landscape, overshadowing other political developments. Biden revealed that he had a “very cordial” conversation with Trump following an assassination attempt on the former president.
Meanwhile, Trump officially secured the Republican nomination during the Republican National Convention, where he appeared with a bandaged ear. Ohio senator JD Vance, a staunch supporter of Trump, was nominated as his running mate.
