Polygon Labs Introduces Plonky3: A Flexible Zero-Knowledge Proving System

Polygon Labs, the leading developer firm behind the layer-2 blockchain Polygon, unveiled the latest version of its zero-knowledge proving system, Plonky3. This new release aims to offer enhanced flexibility compared to its predecessor, Plonky2.
A proving system is a crucial element in zero-knowledge rollups, playing a key role in the cryptographic security of multi-layer distributed networks. It is responsible for generating proofs that summarize off-chain transactions, ensuring the accuracy of transaction execution and blockchain state updates.
Plonky3 is now accessible as open-source software under the MIT and Apache licenses, marking a significant milestone for Polygon Labs.
As Polygon co-founder Daniel Lubarov explained, “Plonky2 had performance issues and lacked the generality we required. Plonky3 represents the future direction of Polygon technology.”
Polygon’s Embrace of Zero-Knowledge Cryptography
Polygon has fully embraced zero-knowledge technology, a prominent trend in the blockchain space. The company acquired the Hermez and Mir teams in 2021, renowned for their expertise in zero-knowledge cryptography.
Notably, Polygon was among the first to launch a zero-knowledge rollup in 2023 and expanded its zero-knowledge capabilities through the acquisition of Toposware.
Brendan Farmer, another co-founder at Polygon, emphasized the significance of the proving system, stating, “It enables efficient and practical proving, a critical aspect of our operations.”
Looking ahead, Polygon aims to consolidate its various prover libraries into a unified framework. This strategic move aligns with the company’s commitment to advancing zero-knowledge technology.
