Gareth Southgate announces his resignation as the England Manager, marking the end of an era in English football. Learn more about his decision and the future of the national team.
Gareth Southgate, the manager who has overseen the most successful period in the recent history of the England men’s soccer team, announced his resignation. Southgate, who led the team to two major finals and guided its response to the coronavirus pandemic and the Black Lives Matter protests, confirmed his departure on the Football Association’s website.
After the defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final in Berlin, Southgate revealed that it was his final game as the England manager after eight years in charge. In a statement, he expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to manage and play for England, stating that it was time for a new chapter.
Southgate, a former England player with over 50 caps, joined the national team program in 2013 as the manager of the under-21 team. In 2016, he took over the senior team on a temporary basis before being appointed as the permanent manager. His eight-year tenure makes him the longest-serving manager of England’s men’s team in more than three decades.
During his time in charge, Southgate led England to the semifinals of the 2018 World Cup, the final of Euro 2020 (held in 2021), and most recently, the final of Euro 2024. His leadership and success on the field endeared him to fans and solidified his place in English soccer history.
