Reflecting on a Culinary Adventure
Earlier this year, I embarked on a culinary quest to explore 140 restaurants in New York City in preparation for my upcoming project, “The 100 Best Restaurants in New York City” 2024 edition. Little did I know that this journey would lead me to a pivotal moment of self-realization.
A Wake-Up Call
During a routine physical examination, I received alarming results. My health indicators, including cholesterol, blood sugar levels, and hypertension, painted a concerning picture. Terms like pre-diabetes, fatty liver disease, and metabolic syndrome were introduced into my reality. It was a wake-up call.
A Decision for Change
Facing the harsh truth of my health status, which included being technically obese, I knew that a significant change was necessary. Despite being halfway through my restaurant list, I made a promise to myself to prioritize my well-being once I completed my culinary adventures.
Unexpected Realizations
As I concluded my restaurant visits, a surprising revelation emerged—I no longer felt the insatiable hunger that once consumed me. The experience of indulging in diverse cuisines had transformed my relationship with food and appetite in ways I had not anticipated.
A Farewell to the Critic’s Chair
After twelve fulfilling years as a restaurant critic for The New York Times, I have made the bittersweet decision to step away from the weekly reviewing grind. While I have a few final reviews in store, my focus has shifted towards embracing a healthier lifestyle, bidding adieu to the demanding routine of critiquing.
Continuing the Journey
Although my tenure as a restaurant critic is drawing to a close, my presence in the newsroom will endure. I look forward to contributing beyond food reviews and embarking on new professional endeavors at The New York Times, embracing a future that prioritizes holistic well-being.
