Remains Found on Tenerife Believed to be Missing British Teenager
Human remains discovered on the Spanish island of Tenerife are suspected to belong to a British teenager who went missing. The investigation is ongoing to confirm the identity of the deceased.
The Spanish authorities announced on Monday that they had discovered the remains of a young man on the island of Tenerife, in the area where British teenager Jay Slater went missing last month.
Discovery of the Body
Mr. Slater, a 19-year-old apprentice bricklayer from England, disappeared on June 17 while vacationing on Tenerife, a popular destination in the Canary Islands. The missing persons organization LBT Global, communicating on behalf of his family, stated on Monday that the body found appears to be that of Jay Slater. It was located near the last known location of Mr. Slater’s mobile phone and was found with his possessions and clothes.
Civil Guard’s Statement
The Spain’s Civil Guard reported that after 29 days of extensive search efforts, the body of a young man was discovered in the area of Masca, a village in the island’s mountains, on Monday morning. The remains were found in a challenging, steep terrain by members of the Civil Guard’s Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group.
The Civil Guard mentioned that the evidence suggests the body could be that of Mr. Slater, although formal identification is pending. The individual seemed to have encountered an accident or fall in the rugged landscape.
Details of the Disappearance
In June, Mr. Slater attended a music festival on Tenerife with friends, including Lucy Law, who shared the last interactions with Mr. Slater before his disappearance. Ms. Law recounted that Mr. Slater informed her that he was lost and in need of help in the mountains with a nearly drained phone battery. The last contact with him was when he mentioned descending a slope near a road.
Family’s Statement
Mr. Slater’s mother, Debbie Duncan, described her son as a young man full of life with a promising future. His disappearance garnered significant media attention and online involvement, with various theories and efforts to assist in the search.
