Whenever our family embarks on a road trip, we have a fail-proof plan to keep our children entertained: tuning in to the fascinating podcast “Greeking Out” by National Geographic Kids. Hosted by Kenny Curtis and the wise “Oracle of Wi-Fi,” this show creatively narrates captivating tales from ancient Greek mythology. Through 10 seasons, our boys have become well-versed in the rich tapestry of myths. For instance, did you know that the blind seer Tiresias was transformed into a woman by Hera for seven years? A revelation that surprised even me!

Our kids are not the only ones captivated by Greek mythology. The resurgence of interest among young audiences can be attributed in part to the immensely popular Percy Jackson series, which follows the adventures of a troubled boy discovering his demigod heritage at Camp Half-Blood. Naturally, chaos ensues!

My younger son, Max, aged 7, has truly embraced the world of demigods. A hedonist at heart, he adores pleasures and chocolate, with his favorite deity being Dionysus, the god of wine, revelry, and madness.

On the other hand, my 10-year-old son, Holt, is more analytical about the Percy Jackson craze. Preferring facts over fiction, Holt’s admiration lies with Athena, the goddess of warfare strategy, wisdom, and weaving.

Personally, I have always harbored a dream of taking my sons to Greece, the birthplace of such rich history and mythology. A chance finally presented itself when the Greek parents of one of Holt’s classmates graciously invited us and another family to visit their ancestral home on the enchanting island of Crete last summer.
