The zoo’s resident brown bear, Tony, is treated to a special snack of large ice cubes filled with frozen fruit and meat. Despite the keeper’s efforts to hide the ice cream in different spots each time, the clever 12-year-old bear manages to locate it every time.

This unique feeding method aims to replicate the natural foraging behavior of animals in the wild. Anita Tsvetanova, the head of animal feeding, emphasizes the importance of providing animals with opportunities to explore, search for food, and experience variety in their daily lives.

With over 2,500 animals in residence, Sofia’s zoo faces the challenge of keeping its diverse inhabitants cool during the Bulgarian heat. The ice cream treats not only offer a refreshing snack but also serve as a form of enrichment for the animals, helping them stay engaged and stimulated in their environment.
