Wanted: Chief for New Border Security Command

An “exceptional leader” with experience in policing, intelligence, or the military is being sought by the British government to head the newly established Border Security Command. The primary task of the appointed chief will be to combat smuggling gangs facilitating the arrival of asylum seekers from France on small, often unsafe boats.

Following the recent change in government, this recruitment marks one of the initial steps taken to address the unauthorized landings that have become a significant challenge in controlling Britain’s borders.

Immigration remains a contentious issue in Europe, and in the UK, the arrival of migrants via small boats has contributed to the electoral success of the anti-immigration party Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has moved to abandon an expensive initiative, previously supported by his predecessor Rishi Sunak, which aimed to transfer some of the many asylum seekers who have reached the southern English coast to Rwanda. Starmer has declared this plan as “dead and buried,” as legal obstacles prevented the implementation of the proposed scheme.

This decision has shifted the focus to Starmer’s approach in addressing a long-standing problem that previous administrations failed to effectively resolve.
