Once known as Twitter, the social media platform X faced legal battles since it was acquired by Elon Musk. One of these lawsuits was based on the allegation that Musk’s company terminated more than 6,000 employees after the acquisition and did not pay them their full severance packages. Recently, Musk achieved a victory in this matter.

A class-action lawsuit filed by former Twitter employee Courtney McMillian claimed that employees did not receive the severance payments they deserved under the Severance Plan. However, U.S. District Judge Trina Thompson in the Northern District of California accepted Musk’s request to dismiss the class-action complaint.

  • Thompson stated that the lawsuit was not appropriate and found that employees received a separate notice regarding a payment plan before the terminations.
  • It was decided that the severance program adopted after Musk’s company acquisition would apply to these former employees instead of the expected 2019 program, leading to the dismissal of the lawsuit.

While this decision marks a loss for the thousands of terminated Twitter employees, there is still a possibility of receiving larger payments in the future. Thompson’s decision indicated that the plaintiffs could amend their claims regarding non-ERISA issues. This decision, to be considered in future legal processes, may lead to different developments in the future.

Furthermore, there are ongoing lawsuits on behalf of some former top executives of Twitter. The outcomes of these lawsuits are also being closely monitored in the industry, and their effects may be observed in the future.
