After enduring two weeks of fierce clashes between Hamas militants and Israeli forces in Gaza City’s Shajaiye neighborhood, the aftermath unveiled a harrowing scene of destruction. The once bustling area now lay in ruins, with flattened buildings and numerous casualties scattered across the debris.

Residents who returned to Shajaiye described a landscape rendered uninhabitable by the conflict. “Homes reduced to rubble, bakeries and shops destroyed, and streets torn apart,” lamented Karam Hassan, a resident who witnessed the devastation firsthand. The magnitude of the destruction was overwhelming.

Israeli troops, now over nine months into the war in Gaza, re-entered previously seized territories, encountering fierce resistance from Hamas fighters. Uncovering weapons caches belonging to the militants further underscored the ongoing challenges faced by the military.

The offensive in Shajaiye formed part of Israel’s broader strategy to quell a resurgent Hamas insurgency in Gaza City. Israel announced the “elimination” of Ayman Showadeh, the deputy commander of Hamas’s Shajaiye Battalion, highlighting his pivotal role in the group’s operations. Showadeh was reportedly involved in directing the Hamas-led attack on October 7 that ignited the conflict.

Ahmed Sidu, a local resident and photographer, painted a grim picture of Shajaiye’s current state, emphasizing the lack of shelter and water in the area. The Palestinian Civil Defense reported the recovery of over 60 bodies from Shajaiye post-Israeli withdrawal, with many individuals still missing and feared buried under the rubble.

The raid had obliterated most of the remaining structures in Shajaiye, following Israel’s initial invasion in October. The extent of the devastation left behind a poignant reminder of the toll exacted by the conflict on the residents of Gaza City.
