On Thursday, July 11, a Starlink launch from California ended in an unexpected malfunction. SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base and due to an engine failure in the second stage, the Starlink satellites were placed into the wrong orbit.

Abnormal Ice Accumulation and Malfunction

When Falcon 9 was launched, everything seemed normal, but abnormal ice accumulation was observed in the Merlin engine of the second stage. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk referred to the situation as “RUD” on social media and stated that they are continuing team efforts to determine the cause of the engine failure.

Status of Satellites and Intervention

Despite the Starlink satellites being in the wrong orbit, the SpaceX team attempted to place the satellites into orbit using ion thrusters. However, it is also stated that the satellites might re-enter the atmosphere and burn up.

Upcoming Missions and Impacts

This unsuccessful launch may affect SpaceX’s upcoming high-profile missions. For example, it could have implications on billionaire Jared Isaacman’s private spacewalk mission and NASA’s crew mission to the International Space Station.

SpaceX will continue to investigate the situation and provide updates as they try to understand the reasons behind the malfunction.
