Apple to Open NFC Functions to Third-Party Applications Under EU Digital Markets Act
Apple will open NFC functions to third-party applications under the European Union’s Digital Markets Act. This content includes news and details about the expansion of NFC technology.
As per the European Union Digital Markets Act, Apple, which opened the App Store of iPhone to third-party app stores, will now provide access to basic NFC functions for third-party developers. With this step, users in Europe will be able to choose between different wallets and payment methods.
According to the statement of European Commission Executive Vice-President Margrethe Vestager, Apple’s restriction of NFC technology only to its own applications was considered an unfair practice. NFC technology is a standard technology and is provided free of charge.
Apple will grant free access to NFC functionality for third-party mobile wallets but will not open the Secure Enclave to third parties. In this case, third-party solutions will be able to securely use NFC functions by using the “Device Primary Account Number (DPAN) Emulation Mode.”
- Third-party wallet applications will be able to use features like double-click to side button and Face ID authentication.
- Users will now be able to choose iPhone Wallets as the default.
Apple is expected to implement these changes for iPhone users in Europe by July 25. Therefore, a software update may be released soon.
