The future of Guo Wengui, the Chinese billionaire known for his vocal opposition to the Chinese Communist Party and embraced by some factions of the American right, now lies in the hands of a Manhattan jury. His trial on charges of fraud and money laundering concluded on Thursday.

Accused of orchestrating a criminal operation that allegedly defrauded investors of over $1 billion through a series of deceptive schemes, including the sale of club memberships, cryptocurrencies, and private shares in his media company, Guo Wengui purportedly used the illicit funds to sustain an extravagant lifestyle. The prosecution claims that the ill-gotten gains financed luxuries such as a New Jersey mansion, a Lamborghini roadster, and a $100 million stake in a hedge fund. Throughout the five-week trial, prosecutors presented a range of evidence, including testimonies from former associates and investors, as well as financial documents detailing transactions.

In his emphatic three-hour closing statement on Wednesday, prosecutor Ryan Finkel asserted, “This was a scheme, this was a con, this was a fraud.” Finkel alleged that Guo Wengui engaged in deceit to misappropriate funds from unsuspecting individuals.

On the other hand, Guo Wengui’s legal team, opting not to have him testify, contended that his business ventures were legitimate and that the funds in question were directed towards his mission of combating Communist governance in China. His endeavors included operating a Chinese-language streaming service and a social media platform reminiscent of Twitter, which gained popularity among exiled dissidents critical of the Chinese government.

“The prosecution seeks to persuade you that there existed a criminal enterprise,” argued Sidhardha Kamaraju, one of Guo Wengui’s attorneys, during his closing statement. “They may be correct, but it is not a racketeering enterprise; rather, it is a political one.”
