President William Ruto of Kenya announced the dismissal of his cabinet on Thursday, marking a significant shake-up in his administration following weeks of anti-government protests that resulted in clashes with the police and the loss of at least 39 lives.

The protests were primarily triggered by opposition to a finance bill proposed by Mr. Ruto, which he claimed would bring stability to the country’s economy. Despite his initial intention to sign the bill, he reversed his decision on June 26, a move welcomed by demonstrators. However, protests persisted with demands for his resignation growing louder.

In a highly anticipated address at the presidential palace in Nairobi, Mr. Ruto defended his administration’s performance since assuming office in 2022 but acknowledged the public’s heightened expectations. He pledged to establish a more inclusive government through extensive consultations with various sectors, political groups, and the general public.

As a result of his consultations, Mr. Ruto made the decision to immediately relieve all cabinet secretaries of their duties, along with the country’s attorney general. He opted to retain the foreign minister, Musalia Mudavadi, in his cabinet. The deputy president, Rigathi Gachagua, will also continue in his role.

President Ruto, a prominent Western ally who was honored by President Biden during a state dinner in Washington in May, where Kenya was recognized as a significant American security partner, faces a challenging period as he navigates the aftermath of these political maneuvers.
