For over two decades, Elon Musk has steered SpaceX towards his long-standing aspiration of reaching Mars. In recent times, he has intensified efforts to envision what life on the red planet could entail. Musk, aged 53, has instructed SpaceX teams to delve into the intricacies of designing a potential Martian city, as confirmed by five sources familiar with the endeavors and documents reviewed by The New York Times.

One team is outlining plans for compact dome habitats, including exploring suitable construction materials. Simultaneously, another team is focused on developing spacesuits to counter Mars’s harsh environment, while a medical unit is investigating the feasibility of human reproduction on the planet. Musk has reportedly offered his sperm to aid in seeding a colony, according to sources acquainted with his remarks.

These initiatives, although in their initial stages, signify a shift towards more tangible planning for sustaining life on Mars, as Musk’s projected timeline accelerates. Initially suggesting it would take 40 to 100 years to establish a self-sustaining civilization on Mars back in 2016, Musk informed SpaceX employees in April of his revised expectation that around one million individuals could inhabit Mars within approximately 20 years.

“There’s high urgency to making life multi-planetary,” Musk emphasized during a public video presentation in April. “We’ve got to do it while civilization is so strong.”

Musk’s relentless pursuit of the seemingly impossible has often defied the odds. However, his vision for life on Mars embodies his most audacious ambition to date. With no human ever setting foot on the planet, NASA isn’t anticipating manned missions to Mars until the 2040s. Upon arrival, individuals would encounter a desolate landscape characterized by freezing temperatures, dust storms, and an inhospitable atmosphere.
