Kevin Costner’s ‘Horizon’ Film Experiment Faces Unexpected Challenges
Kevin Costner’s film experiment ‘Horizon’ encounters unforeseen obstacles as it navigates through uncharted territory, testing the boundaries of creativity and resilience in the face of adversity.
Kevin Costner’s Bold Film Experiment Takes an Unexpected Turn
Kevin Costner embarked on an ambitious venture this summer with the release of the first chapter of his epic western saga, “Horizon.” Costner not only directed and starred in the film but also co-wrote it and contributed to its financing. The initial chapter hit theaters nationwide on June 28, setting the stage for an innovative release strategy.
However, the outcome of this daring move was not as anticipated. Despite Costner’s vision, the box office reception for the first chapter fell short of expectations. With disappointing ticket sales, the planned sequential release of the second chapter on August 16 has been called off.
New Line Cinema, a Warner Bros. subsidiary, officially announced the cancellation of “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 2.” The initial installment, with a budget of $100 million, only managed to gross $22.6 million overall, leading to the altered distribution plans.
Originally envisioned as a four-part saga depicting the post-Civil War Western expansion, the “Horizon” project faced a setback with the underperformance of its opening chapter. Those who had already purchased tickets for the sequel will be eligible for refunds.
As a response to the shifting circumstances, “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1” will now be accessible through premium video on demand starting next Tuesday. This move aims to provide a broader audience the opportunity to engage with the initial installment in the following weeks. Additionally, the film will be featured on Max, the streaming platform from Warner Bros. Discovery, although a specific release date has not been confirmed.
While the future of the second chapter remains uncertain in terms of its release, Kevin Costner, who heavily invested $38 million of his own funds into the project, refrained from commenting on this recent development. Despite leaving his role in the popular TV series “Yellowstone” due to scheduling conflicts related to “Horizon,” Costner began filming the third chapter in May.
Territory Pictures, Costner’s production company, expressed gratitude for the support received from film enthusiasts and theater owners who embraced the cinematic journey offered by “Horizon.” The company emphasized its commitment to the project and the belief in the audience’s appreciation for the films created. The statement hinted at an extended release window for the film series to enhance the viewing experience of “Horizon 2.”
