Google Maps has introduced speedometer and speed limit indicators for iOS and CarPlay. Now iPhone users can track their speed and speed limits while using Google Maps on their devices or through CarPlay. This feature supports safe driving by sending alerts to drivers not to exceed speed limits. While Google Maps has had these features for Android since 2019, Waze has been offering the same features since 2016.

Enabling the Feature on iOS

To enable the speedometer and speed limit features in Google Maps, touch your profile picture and go to Settings > Navigation section. From there, you can turn on the speedometer and speed limit features. The speedometer will appear in the bottom left corner of the screen and will change color to alert you when you exceed the speed limit.

Warning: Speed Measured from Satellites

Google specifies that the speedometer should only be used for informational purposes. This feature should not replace your vehicle’s actual speedometer. Google reminds that since it shows the speed measured from satellites tracking you, this speed may not always be an exact reflection of your actual speed. Therefore, the speed value on your vehicle’s own speedometer will always be the correct reference.
